Candle Care Guide

At MAMO, we take great pride in the quality of our candles and hope you enjoy them as much as we loved crafting them. To ensure your safety and the longevity of your candles, please follow the guidance provided below. MAMO cannot be held responsible for any injury, damage, or loss that occurs as a result of improper use or negligence when burning our candles. Your safety is our priority, so please burn responsibly.

General Candle Safety Instructions:

  • First Burn: Allow the wax to melt fully across the surface during your first burn to prevent tunneling and to ensure an even burn for future use.
  • Never Leave Unattended: Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Burning Time: Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Extinguish and allow it to cool before relighting.
  • Surface Placement: Always burn candles on a flat, heat-resistant surface to prevent heat damage or accidental tipping.
  • Keep Away from Children & Pets: Ensure candles are out of reach of children and animals at all times.
  • Spacing: Leave at least 10cm (about 4 inches) between burning candles to avoid overheating or excessive flames.
  • Fire Safety: Do not place candles near flammable materials such as curtains, papers, or clothing.
  • Draught-Free Zone: Avoid burning candles in areas exposed to drafts, ceiling fans, or air currents. This can cause uneven burning, sooting, or excessive flickering.
  • Wick Maintenance: Trim the wick to 5mm before each burn to control the flame size and ensure an even, slow burn.
  • Extinguish Properly: Always snuff out the flame rather than blowing it out to avoid splattering wax or sparking.
  • Wax Level: Do not burn your candle to the very bottom of the jar. Leave at least 5mm of wax to prevent the glass from overheating or breaking.

The appearance of cracks or unevenness on the surface of your cooled candle is normal when using natural waxes. This does not affect the performance or quality of your candle.

Wick trimmers, snuffers, and other candle care tools are available for purchase on our accessories page.

Jar Candle Care

Our jar candles are designed to bring warmth and fragrance to your home. To get the best experience from your candle, please follow these specific care tips:

  1. First Burn Matters: Burn your candle for at least 4 hours the first time to create a full melt pool, preventing tunneling and ensuring a consistent burn.
  2. Wick Trimming: Always trim the wick to 5mm before each burn to maintain an optimal flame height. A longer wick can cause the candle to burn too quickly and unevenly.
  3. Keep Clean: Make sure the wax pool is free of debris such as burnt wick pieces or match heads. These can act as secondary wicks, accelerating the burn time.
  4. Soot Control: Trimming the wick helps prevent excessive soot, which can leave marks on the glass.
  5. Recenter Wick: Before the wax cools, if the wick has shifted off-center, gently adjust it back to the middle to ensure even burning in future uses.
  6. Burn Time Limit: Avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Allow the candle to cool before lighting it again.
  7. No Hot Moves: Never move your candle while it’s lit. Wait for the wax to solidify to avoid accidents.

Tea Light Care

Our tea lights are a perfect option for soft ambiance or for use with wax burners. Here’s how to care for them:

  1. Flat Surface: Always burn your tea lights on a flat, heat-resistant surface to avoid any fire hazards or damage to your furniture.
  2. Limit Burn Time: Use unscented tea lights and never burn them for more than 4 hours at a time to ensure safety and preserve the longevity of your products.
  3. Check Surroundings: Keep tea lights away from flammable objects and out of drafts, as even small flames can pose a risk.
  4. Do Not Overcrowd: When using multiple tea lights, ensure they are spaced far enough apart to avoid heat build-up.

Pillar Candle Care

Our pillar candles are primarily intended for decorative use. However, if you choose to burn them, please take extra care to ensure safety:

  1. Protect Your Surfaces: Always place pillar candles on a stable, heat-resistant tray to catch any melted wax. The tray will protect your surfaces from heat damage and ensure fire safety.
  2. Watch for Drips: As these candles are not contained within a jar, they may drip wax. Keep away from delicate or easily damaged surfaces.
  3. Proper Placement: Place away from drafts, flammable materials, and out of reach of children and pets.
  4. Do Not Leave Unattended: Never leave a pillar candle burning without supervision. Due to their open design, they can become a fire risk if not monitored.

Please note: MAMO is not liable for any surface damage, fire hazards, or other issues that arise due to improper use of pillar candles.

Wax Melt Care

Our wax melts offer a flameless fragrance option, providing long-lasting scent for your space. Follow these steps to enjoy them safely:

  1. Proper Use: Remove all packaging before placing the wax melt in the burner. Use only with a tea light burner or electric wax warmer that’s in good working condition.
  2. Tea Light Selection: If using a traditional burner, select an unscented 4-hour tea light for safety and optimal performance.
  3. Safe Placement: Always place your burner on a flat, heat-resistant surface, away from children and pets.
  4. Heat Caution: Wax burners can become very hot. Never move or touch the burner while in use, and allow sufficient cooling time before handling.
  5. Scent Time: Each wax melt will release fragrance for approximately 10-12 hours. When the scent fades, it’s time to replace the melt.
  6. Easy Melt Removal: When it’s time to change your wax, light your burner for a minute or two until the wax softens. This will allow the wax to pop out easily.
  7. Evaporation Process: Remember, it’s the scent that evaporates, not the wax. Over time, the fragrance will diminish, but the wax will remain.

Candle Tools: Wick Trimmer, Snuffer, and Wick Dipper

Why Trimming Your Wick is Important

Trimming the wick to 5mm before each burn ensures that your candle burns cleanly and evenly. A shorter wick helps control the size of the flame, reducing the risk of excessive heat and soot build-up, which can discolor your jar or cause uneven burns. When the wick is too long, the flame becomes unstable, burning the wax too quickly and potentially overheating the container.

How to Use a Wick Trimmer:

  • Hold the wick trimmer at an angle over the top of the candle.
  • Trim the wick to about 5mm before each burn.
  • Discard any wick trimmings before lighting the candle to ensure a clean burn.

Why You Should Use a Candle Snuffer

Blowing out a candle can cause splatters of hot wax and create unwanted smoke. A candle snuffer extinguishes the flame smoothly, eliminating the risk of wax splattering and ensuring a safer method of extinguishing.

How to Use a Candle Snuffer:

  • Place the bell of the snuffer over the candle’s flame.
  • Hold it until the flame goes out completely. This prevents sparks and minimizes smoke.

Using a Wick Dipper

A wick dipper helps extinguish the flame without smoke while priming the wick for the next burn. By dipping the wick into the melted wax pool, you extinguish it safely while coating it for a clean and smooth next burn.

How to Use a Wick Dipper:

  • Gently push the wick into the melted wax pool with the dipper until the flame is extinguished.
  • Straighten the wick back up before the wax hard

Wick dippers are great for your container candles, but snuffers allow you to extinguish taller candles such as  pillars, while eliminating the chance of blowing hot wax all over the place.

Wax Disposal and Recycling

Once you’ve enjoyed your candles and wax melts, it’s essential to dispose of any leftover wax and packaging responsibly:

  • Wax Disposal: Although the wax itself is non-toxic, it cannot be recycled. Solidified wax should be disposed of in the general waste bin (non-recyclable). Please ensure that all wax is cool and hardened before discarding.
  • Recycling the Jar: If your candle came in a glass jar, it can be recycled after cleaning. To clean the jar, place it in hot water to soften any remaining wax, wipe it out with a paper towel, and rinse it with soap and warm water. Once the jar is wax-free, it can be placed in your recycling bin for glass.
  • Tea Light Holders and Wax Burners: If you use tea light holders or burners, ensure they are properly cleaned and dried before reusing. The containers from tea lights can be recycled, provided they are clean of wax residue and the wick and wick base have been removed
