Material Integrity: Our Plastic-Free Packaging Approach
At MAMO, packaging is treated as part of the product — not an afterthought.
We operate as a plastic-free studio, choosing materials that are proven, recyclable, and widely accepted within existing recycling systems.
We prioritise packaging that can either return safely to the environment or remain in long-term circulation, without shedding microplastics or introducing unnecessary chemical exposure into the home.
The MAMO Material Standard
Our packaging materials are selected using three criteria:
- Material safety (for people and pets)
- Recyclability or reusability at scale
- Long-term environmental impact
We favour materials that have been used reliably for generations: glass, metal, paper, and cotton.
Materials We Use
Aluminium Tins
Used for face bars, dog soaps, balms, and wax melts. Aluminium is lightweight and infinitely recyclable, helping to reduce transport emissions while remaining easy to recycle across Ireland and the EU.
Glass Bottles
Our canine coat spray is housed in glass to preserve formula integrity and avoid the chemical leaching associated with plastic packaging.
Natural Cotton Bags
Our soaps are wrapped in reusable cotton bags that protect the bar while remaining breathable and plastic-free. They’re designed to be reused long after the soap is gone.
Paper & Cardboard
Loofah soaps and candles are packaged in FSC-certified paper and cardboard. These materials are widely recyclable and compostable in appropriate systems.
Repurposed Shipping Materials
To reduce waste, we actively reuse clean packaging materials that enter our studio — including boxes, paper padding, and biodegradable starch peanuts.
This means your delivery may look slightly different from order to order. We believe reusing a box is far preferable to producing a new one, particularly as a small studio operating within a rural Wicklow landscape.
We encourage customers to reuse or recycle all packaging where possible.
What We Avoid
We maintain a clear internal “no” list for packaging materials.
You will not find the following in MAMO orders:
- Plastic bottles, pumps, or liners
- Synthetic fibres or polyesters
- Plastic-coated or laminated packaging
- Harsh chemical adhesives
Where compromise is unavoidable, we choose the least impactful option available and review it regularly.
Looking Ahead
As a family-run business led by a food engineer and chemist, we assess materials carefully rather than following surface-level sustainability trends.
Our focus remains simple:
safe materials, minimal waste, and products designed to be used — not disposed of.
