Soap Care Guide

Extending the lifespan of your cold processed soap

At MAMO, we understand that the allure of cold process (CP) soap is its luxurious lather and natural composition. However, concerns about its potential to dissolve quickly can sometimes deter enthusiasts. With our expert tips, you can ensure your CP soap remains effective and elegant for as long as possible.

Why Does Cold Process Soap Melt?

Cold process soap combines nourishing oils (such as coconut, olive oil, cocoa butter, castor oil and shea butter) with sodium hydroxide. The resulting bar is firm thanks to the “hard oils,” while conditioning oils contribute to its softness. Glycerin, a natural byproduct, helps moisturize your skin but can cause the soap to become mushy if exposed to excess moisture. Unlike commercial soaps, which often contain additives and lack natural glycerin, CP soaps require mindful care to maintain their integrity.

Essential Tips for Extending the Life of Your Cold Process Soap

Shield from Excess Water

While water is essential for lathering, direct and prolonged exposure can cause your soap to dissolve. Keep your soap away from the direct stream of water during use and ensure it is stored in a dry area post-use.

 Lather in Your Hands

To preserve your soap, create lather in your hands before applying it to your body. This technique minimizes the soap’s contact with water and ensures a slower rate of wear.

 Use Minimal Water

A small amount of water is sufficient to generate a rich lather from CP soap. Over time, you will learn the optimal amount of water needed for each soap, allowing you to enjoy a luxurious shower without excessive moisture.

 Choose the Right Soap Dish

Select a soap dish that facilitates proper drainage and airflow. Avoid dishes that collect water or have minimal drainage, as these can lead to soggy soap. Opt for bamboo or silicone dishes with ample drainage and minimal contact with the soap.

Rotate Your Soap

To ensure even drying, position your soap in various orientations. This practice prevents any one side from remaining damp and helps maintain the bar’s longevity.

Regularly Inspect Your Soap

Make it a habit to check and reposition your soap as needed. This simple action prevents the soap from sticking to the dish and promotes even drying.

 Handle Stuck Soap Gently

If your soap becomes stuck, avoid aggressive removal methods. Instead, gently twist the soap or turn the dish upside down to dislodge it. This approach minimizes damage to the soap.

 Ensure Proper Ventilation

Enhance your soap’s lifespan by ensuring good airflow in your bathroom. Open a window to promote drying and reduce moisture-related issues, such as mold.

Maximizing Your Soap’s Use

Extend the life of each MAMO soap bar by using it until it is entirely gone. When only small pieces remain, place them in a sisal soap bag to make the most of every bit. Our goal is to ensure that your investment in self-care yields maximum enjoyment and zero waste.

Disposal and Recycling

Dispose of soap remnants in the general waste bin, as they are biodegradable. Recycle any packaging in the appropriate bins to support environmental sustainability.
